“Everyone deserves to be led well," Mark Cole

Welcome to Transforming Life with Heidi, a place where service, resilience, and reinvention meet. After 26 years in the Air Force and navigating the challenges of military life, leadership, and personal battles, I’m sharing the lessons learned along the way. Through my Boots, Battles & Business journey, I explore leadership, growth, and what it means to build a new mission after life’s toughest moments.

For most of my adult life, service defined who I was.

I served 26 years in the Air Force across active duty, Guard, and Reserve. Like many who serve, I followed the path laid out: work hard, meet the requirements, and prepare for the next promotion.

At one point in my career, I earned my certification with Maxwell Leadership. At the time, I believed it would help me better lead the Airmen around me and position me for the next promotion I had been working toward.

On paper, I was ready.

But mentally and skillfully, I began realizing there was more to leadership than simply checking the required boxes.

Active duty promotions often follow a clear path. You test, receive a score, meet additional criteria, and if you fall within the promotion range, you move forward.

The Guard and Reserve operate differently.

First, there has to be an available position in your career field and location. Then you must be willing to accept that position or move. Even when positions are available, you must submit a resume demonstrating your readiness for promotion and leadership experience.

Looking back, I realized something important.

While I had technically completed the requirements, I had not truly demonstrated my readiness for greater leadership responsibility. My resume didn’t reflect the growth or leadership development needed for the promotion I had been hoping would happen on its own.

I submitted my resume for a few positions, assuming things would fall into place.

They didn’t.

At the same time, I was working toward my master’s degree in Executive Leadership, trying to deepen my understanding of what leadership truly means.

Leadership development and personal growth during military career transition

Then life introduced another turning point.

My husband, who had already retired from active duty and was working for the Department of Defense, received an opportunity for promotion. Accepting it meant relocating to New Mexico.

For me, that move meant I would no longer have easy access to a Guard or Reserve unit.

And honestly, that didn’t bother me.

By that time, I had completed 26 years of service across active duty, Guard, and Reserve. Not long after, I also received notice that I would not be receiving career status due to the length of time I had remained an E-6.

Instead of seeing that moment as an ending, I saw it as permission.

Permission to take off the boots.

I became a full-time student and focused on completing my degree. At the same time, I knew another move might be in our future, and I wanted something different — more freedom, more family time, and the opportunity to build something meaningful.

That realization led me into the world of entrepreneurship.

But there was another reason this journey began.

Throughout my career, I often felt that I had not received the leadership or guidance I needed to truly understand what it took to grow into the next level of responsibility. I had mentors and leaders along the way, but I often found myself wishing someone had clearly shown me the path forward.

Beginning a new chapter after military service and starting entrepreneurship

When I became active with Maxwell Leadership, I heard a quote from Mark Cole that immediately resonated with me:

“Everyone deserves to be led well.”

That statement changed how I viewed my own experiences.

It also became one of the reasons I started this blog.

Transforming Life with Heidi is where I share the lessons learned through service, leadership, personal battles, and now entrepreneurship.

Because leadership is not just about rank, title, or promotion.

It’s about growth, guidance, and helping others discover the potential within themselves.

And I believe everyone deserves to be led well.

This is part of my Boots, Battles & Business journey — lessons from service, survival, and starting over.
